How We Make Investment Decisions
MKG’s investment strategy comes from a combination of several schools of investment philosophy, and the combined experience of our principals.
At MKG, we focus on the influence of globalization on the industries and corporations of the world and on our specific region. Globalization – the competition and collaboration between international industries, the far-reaching effects of technology and production processes, the ever-increasing “flattening” of the world – is the most important driving force upon the world’s economies, and at MKG we strive to understand the effects these trends are having on national and international markets.
We research industry securities and corporate stocks in industry white papers, government and independent business reports, publications on new technology trends, and other relevant sources.
Our philosophy incorporates three primary investing paradigms: Value investing, Contrarian investing, and Special Situations (or Distressed Securities). A general overview of these paradigms is as follows:
Value investing refers to the idea that informed investors can determine, using fundamental analysis of corporate and industry reports, securities whose shares are underpriced.
Contrarian investing refers to the idea that crowd behavior (investors flocking to stocks that are doing well, and abandoning stocks that are doing poorly) can lead to situations in which securities are overvalued or undervalued. Contrarian investing ideally exploits these incorrect valuations by taking holdings contrary to what the wider market is doing.
Special Situations refers to making investments during unique situations when companies or industries are either overvalued or undervalued in the market. This is usually due to unique circumstances; often the influence of negative reports about a company (also called Distressed Securities).
MKG uses a team approach to portfolio management that relies on the combined 90 years of financial and investment experience of our principals. Meet the MKG Team here.
Today’s investors want full knowledge of what is happening with their account. Our secure login portal allows our clients to view their current holdings and their portfolio activity in real time, as well as their monthly account reports. We mail quarterly reports that give comparisons between MKG portfolios and general market performance, and include realized and unrealized gain and loss information on specific holdings.
Based in Portland, Oregon, near many of our clients, we always make ourselves available to talk on the phone, at our office, or even in person at a local coffee shop. It is one of the pleasures of doing business in this region. We can know our clients on a personal basis, and we believe in answering any and all questions our clients and potential clients may have about how we operate.

At MKG Financial Group, we hold a strong belief in leading a life that is balanced between work, home and community. As a reflection of our belief in community involvement at the personal and corporate level, we lend leadership and financial support to the following Oregon based organizations:
De La Salle North is a North Catholic High School providing a faith-based, college preparatory education to underserved students from the Portland area. Their goal is to develop tomorrow’s community leaders by making high-quality education accessible to motivated young people in a learning environment that values cultural, spiritual, and ethnic diversity. The educational approach provides each student with the opportunity to succeed through small classes, high expectations, and active participation in their Corporate Internship Program. They don’t turn away any capable, motivated or interested student because they cannot afford the tuition.
Folk Time is a Portland based nonprofit providing peer support for individuals living with mental illness. FolkTime currently has two program areas of Peer Support, including socialization programs at three locations in and around Portland, and peer support specialists in three clinics in Clackamas County.
White Bird Dance is committed to bringing the best Portland-based, regional, national, and international dance companies to Portland, Oregon and to fostering the growth of dance in the region. White Bird strongly believes in making dance exciting, educational, and accessible to everyone, young and old, of all social backgrounds, and seeks to realize these goals through contributed income and sponsorships, which will facilitate outreach to schools and keep ticket prices affordable. Fifteen years, 160 dance companies, 29 new works commissioned and a total audience of over 350,000 – and all since Walter Jaffe and Paul King launched White Bird in July 1997 as a not-for-profit organization.
